Last month, there was only one corporate bankruptcy (with liabilities of 10 million yen or more) in the prefecture. This was shown in the national corporate bankruptcy situation for February, announced by Tokyo Shoko Research on the 8th. In Tohoku, the prefecture is at a low level, tied with Iwate Prefecture.

In February, the number of corporate bankruptcies nationwide increased by 118 cases or 25.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, totaling 577 cases, and the total liabilities increased by 36% to 965.8 billion yen.

The number of bankruptcies has increased year-on-year for 11 consecutive months since June 2008 to April 2021, a period of 13 years and 10 months. Although the number of cases is low, the rate of increase has been accelerating, with a growth rate of over 20% compared to the same month of the previous year since December last year. As a result, the cumulative total for the current fiscal year as of the end of February was 6,071 cases, which exceeded the previous fiscal year by 91 cases or 1.5%.

On the other hand, although the total amount of liabilities increased year-on-year for the second consecutive February, it has remained below 1 trillion yen for the fourth consecutive year. The bankruptcy of medium-sized companies, with liabilities of over 1 billion yen including Dynamics (Tokyo bankruptcy, with liabilities of 11.23 billion yen), increased gradually, with 16 cases (compared to 9 cases in the same month of the previous year) for those with liabilities of over 1 million yen but less than 500 million yen, while those with liabilities of less than 100 million yen accounted for over 70% of the total with 436 cases (compared to 340 cases in the same month of the previous year), indicating a trend dominated by bankruptcies of small and micro enterprises.

There were 228 coronavirus-related bankruptcies in February, a significant increase of 57.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of cases in the 200s has continued for six months, with a cumulative total of 5,232 cases since February 2020.

In the prefecture, the number of bankruptcies in February decreased from 4 cases in the same month of the previous year to 1 case, and the amount of liabilities decreased from 440 million yen to 157 million yen. Among the other prefectures in Tohoku, Miyagi Prefecture had the highest number of bankruptcies at 16, while Aomori and Yamagata Prefectures had 4 cases each, and Iwate Prefecture had the lowest number with 1 case, tied with the prefecture. For the prefecture, it was the lowest level since two years ago when there were no bankruptcies in February. (3:00 pm)
